Lisbon, Portugal.
February, 2018.
Captivated by the aesthetics of ceramics in Lisbon city, I decided to make a visual inventory of geometric motifs that caught my eye in the passages and facades; design and architecture that somehow reminded me of Latin America. At the same time, I was seduced by the intricate stone flooring found throughout the city, a highly attractive handiwork. I decided to transfer this information through a series of frottages, where the defined geometric shapes were not reflected on the paper, but rather, were only a diffuse and abstract result.
The project ended with a small exhibition and an open day through a colloquium with the Portuguese curator Marta Mestre.
Lisboa writings
Amalia Valdés, Feb 2018
Ambiguous memories of a historical and artisinal legacy,
sometimes bluish, sometimes tile, sometimes abstract,
they communicate mysteriously through a pattern,
symbolic and universal fragments of a language,
from a timeless era,
from a timeless state,
from a meditative exercise.
A continuous experience that undertakes a mystical search.
Manual processes intentionally intensive, precise, expansive,
models searching to find geometric balance.
An interaction of negatives and positives,
backgrounds and figures,
all hiding in a labyrinth that fills the void.
Fragments of surfaces, ornaments of the sky and soil,
A time that is past, present or none,
a rise and fall,
structures without end, without limits, happy ornaments.
