24! Fragen an die Konkrete Gegenwart
GROUP SHOW AT Museum für Konkrete Kunst, Würzburg.
CURATORS: Mariana Aravidou, Dr. Henrike Holsing, Dr. Mathias Listl, and Dr. Theres Rohde
MARCH - SEPTEMBEr 2024
To mark the 100th anniversary of the term "Concrete Art", the works of 24 young artists are being exhibited.
"24! - Fragen an die Konkrete Gegenwart" is a co-operation between the Museum im Kulturspeicher (MiK) in Würzburg and the Museum für Konkrete Kunst (MKK) in Ingolstadt. Both museums are home to large, important collections of works of constructivist-concrete art in Europe. A total of 24 selected artists will be shown - twelve at MiK and twelve at MKK. They were born in the 1980s and are associated with this art movement in a narrower or broader sense. As part of "24!", the artists will examine how the idea of the "concrete" continues to have an impact: Have the beginnings of "Art concret" influenced their own artistic work? Are the principles of concrete art, which are mostly based on creative precision and geometric principles, still relevant? What new forms of expression do artists create and what does this mean for our perception?
The exhibition "24!" explores the question of how the diverse collective term "Concrete Art" can still inspire and move us. The works on display range from paintings and installations to interactive, digital sculptures (augmented reality, AR).
The cooperation of the two institutions has made it possible to present abroad selection of artists and to engage together with the present and future of Concrete Art. Another element linking the two shows is an exhibition catalogue being published by the Deutscher Kunstverlag. It has 176 pages and contains texts by Mariana Aravidou, Dr. Henrike Holsing, Dr. Mathias Listl, and Dr. Theres Rohde.
Modern life needs new forms - the pioneers of constructive-concrete art were already convinced of this 100 years ago. The concept of "Concrete Art" served, among other things, as a catalyst to realise the peculiarities of modern life.
